UNIT 5

Trans-shipping (or discharging) operations

When fish are checked up and the cargo-officer (or representative of any foreign fish company) is satisfied with the fish quality he makes arrangements with the technologists of a Ukrainian ship about the means of trans-shipping the fish from one ship to another

Fish to be discharged can be fresh, chilled or frozen and packed into boxes (cartons) or containers. The average weight of each frozen fish box is usually about 30-32 kg. A container can reach a weight up to 80 kg.

As a rule fresh and chilled fish are discharged with different types of pumps, such as feed-water pump, vacuum pump or transfer pump. If for this or that reason a pump can't be used then fish are discharged with a brail Boxes or contained fish are usually counted by the number of boxes or containers. To cover the net weight of the packing two per cent of the total number of boxes (or containers) are always given to the receiving ship in addition.

Cargo-officer: Mr. Pavlov, we have been discharging the fish for about an hour I think it's     time to check up the fish temperature once again.

Technologist:  All right, Mr. Robinson. I'll tell my seamen to stop discharging and wait.

Cargo-officer:  Everything is OK. Let's continue the trans-shipping

Technologist: Mr Robinson, how often are you going to measure the temperature of the fish discharged?

Cargo-officer:  I think every 20-30 minutes.

Technologist:  O.K. That's settled.
