Satellite navigation system.

Principle of Satellite Navigation System.

The artificial satellites utilized in navigation for position fixing are “transit satellites” which are placed in polar orbit at an altitude of approximately 1100 km. A total of five satellites are operational as of September,1980, and circle the earth in approximately 106 minutes. Each of these five satellites is assigned with a specific number for identification. They are 30110, 30140, 30190 and 30200.

Since the satellites take the stationary routes all times, a presentation of the five orbits suggest a fixed spherical birdcage, inside which the earth turns on its axis. Thus, every point on the earth surface passes under each of the five orbits two times every twenty four hours. Position fixing with the satellites is made whenever any of the five satellites come within line of sight of the ground receiver.

The satellites continuously transmit signals on two frequencies of 149.988 MHz and 399.968 MHz. The signals contain satellite’s position information that is updated every two minutes and the time mark that is emitted every even minute of GMT.

Based on these signals, the receiver on the earth’s calculates the satellite position and also measures the doppler shift of the rf frequency.

1-2. Accuracy of Satellite Fix.

The position fixing error of the satellite navigation system is mainly resulted from the following factors.
