Magnetic beam focusing is achieved by a focusing coil which produces an axial magnetic field along part of the length of the electron beam. The magnetic field ensures focusing of the beam on one spot on the tube screen.
Deflection of the electron beam is accomplished in the same manner as focusing, that is, either by an electric field or by a magnetic field. The electrostatic system of beam deflection consists of two pairs of vertical and horizontal deflecting plates. When an electron passes between two parallel plates to which a certain voltage is applied, it will be deflected towards the positively charged plate. If there are two pairs of mutually normal plates the electron beam can be deflected in horizontal and vertical planes.
Magnetic field deflection is accomplished by two pairs of deflecting coils mounted into the tube neck at right angles to each other. The greater the magnetic field intensity and the lower the voltage which accelerates the electrons, the greater is the beam deflection.
The tube screen is a semitransparent thin layer of a luminous substance.
