Modulation

Impressing the audio signal upon the radio wave is known as modulation; in other words it is the process of controlling (modulating) the high frequency oscillations during the transmission of voice, music, television signals or intelligence. The resulting type of transmission is called radiotelephony. A simple radiotelephone transmitter consists of a combination of an oscillator, to produce radio waves (H.F. oscillations), and a means of modulating radio waves. The audio signal enters a microphone, where it is converted into electrical waves that vary at audio frequencies. These waves are then strengthened by one or more stages of audio-frequency amplification, and then they enter a stage known as the modulator. This stage causes the amplitude of the radio wave generated by the oscillator to vary at a rate that is controlled (modulated) by the frequency of the original sound wave.

The high frequency current in the antenna, in the absence of message transmission, is termed the carrier frequency current; it is characterized by three parameters: amplitude, frequency, and phase. Message transmission can be achieved by affecting (modulating) any one of these parameters.

Accordingly, amplitude (AM), frequency (FM), and phase (PM) modulation are discerned. Radio equipment, in the main, is operated by frequency and amplitude modulation; more rarely, by pulse modulation.

Amplitude modulation (AM)

This modulation is most widely used in radio telephone service, i.e. in the transmission of audio signals. The amplitude of the high frequency current is varied in accordance  with variations of the audio frequency signal.
