Prepositions of time:

For + the exact period (for three months);

during + the period in general (during the holidays);

since = the point from which you started counting the time (since childhood);

throughout = the period from the beginning to the end (throughout my life);

within = inside the limits of a certain period of time, not later than (within a week);

before, after, till/ until, by, between, from … to/ till, past, to, towards, over.
