4.2. Feed water and antiscalants

The CaSO4 scaling threshold tests were carried out with solutions simulating the Ca+2, Mg+2 and SO4!2 contents of Nur Springs raw water [17]. Nur Springs water contains 21.8 mM Ca+2, 12.3 mM Mg+2 and 9.7 mM SO4!2 and reaches saturation with respect to CaSO4 at a 30% water recovery. Feed solutions were prepared by dissolving CaCl2 and MgSO4 in distilled water.

Table 2 shows the composition of Nur Springs concentrates at various water recovery levels. The CaSO4 supersaturation ratio covered in the experiments was in the range of 1.6–5.2. The corresponding total salinity was in the range of 10–13 g/L (osmotic pressure of 5–7 bar).

Five different antiscalants (Table 3) were tested at two concentration levels of 6 and

12 ppm, respectively, based on zero recovery
