Mahajanga (Madagascar)

PORT DESCRIPTION

Location: Majunga (Mahajanga) is situated on the NW coast of Madagascar on Bombetoka Bay. General overview: Cargo operations are carried out in the roadstead for ocean-going vessels and at the quay for small coastal vessels. Traffic figures: Approx 11,000t of rice, 7,000t of salt and 66,000t of containers handled annually. Load Line zone: Tropical.

PRE ARRIVAL INFORMATION

Communications: VHF: Ch 16.

Health regulations: Vessels arriving from another port in Madagascar are granted free pratique. The Port Health Officer boards vessels requesting clearance, from sunrise to sunset only. Such vessels may not proceed farther into Heldrano Bombetoka than Majunga until pratique has been granted.

NAVIGATION

Sea buoys, fairways and channels: There are 3 channels that lead to Majunga, between Toraka Cavalier and Toraka Narcissus, as follows:

Chenal du Nord Ouest entrance (15°36'S 046°11'E) which is the principal channel, suitable for ocean going vessels.

Chenal du Nord Est entrance (15°30'S 046°22'E), normally used by coasters approaching from NE.

Chenal de l'Ouest entrance (15°40'S 046°06'E), which can be used by coasters approaching from W.

From a position off the N end of Toraka Cavalier (15°33'S 046°07'E), the bearing 152° of Pointe Antanandava (15°50'S 046°19'E), open E of Pointe de Katsepy (8.5nm NNW), leads into Chenal du Nord Ouest, passing approx 0.5nm WSW of a buoy (7.5nm NNW of Pointe de Katsepy), moored off the entrance to the channel between Toraka Cavalier and Toraka Narcissus.

From the vicinity of the channel entrance buoy, the bearing 163° of Katsepy Light leads through Chenal du Nord Ouest, passing approx 0.3nm WSW of a lightbuoy (3.25nm N of Katsepy Light), moored on the SW side of Toraka Narcissus.  From the vicinity of the lightbuoy the bearing 116° of Pointe Anorombato Light (white metal tower, black band and lantern, 11m in height) (4nm E of Pointe de Katsepy) leads along the S side of Toraka Narcissus, at night, on the limit of the green sector (303°-116°) and the white sector (116°-122°) of the light. The light stands on a high point.  From a position off the S end of Toraka Narcissus the alignment 132° of the leading lights (see "Principal navigation aids") leads to the anchorage passing (positions given from Pointe Anorombato):

SW of Dique Schneider, the seaward end of which is marked by a light (white tower, red lantern, 5m in height)(0.37nm NW), thence:

Close NE of a lightbuoy (0.9nm SW), moored off the NW end of a shallow bank which borders the S side of the anchorage, then:

SW of a buoy (0.9nm SSE) moored off the S end of a drying bank of mud and sand on the NE side of the anchorage.

Chenal du Nord Est: From a position approx 7nm W of Lohatanjona Maromanjo (15°30'S 046°29'E), off the entrance to Chenal du Nord Est where a buoy is charted. The bearing 194° of Pointe Anorombato light (15°43'S 046°18'E) leads SSW through the N part of the channel, between Toraka Narcissus and a bank with depths of 5.5m or less over it that fringes most of the coast SW from Lohatanjona Maromanjo.

The bearing 217° of Massif de Kandrany (15°47'S 046°12'E) leads through the S part of the channel, passing NW of the coastal bank on which is a drying reef and (positions given from Pointe Anorombato) NW of:

A detached 5.5m patch (2.25nm N).

Roche Antsahambingo (1.75nm NNW).

Dique Schneider (0.37nm NW), into the inner end of Chenal du Nord Ouest.

Chenal de l'Ouest: From the entrance to Chenal de l'Ouest (15°40'S 046°06'E) the track through the channel leads E, over the S part of Toraka Cavalier, passing (positions given from Katsepy Light (15°43'S 046°13'E):

N of a depth of 4.9m (6nm WNW), on the coastal bank, then:

S of a 3.5m shoal (5.25nm NW), on Toraka Cavalier, then:

N of a depth of 4.3m (3nm WNW), on the coastal bank, then:

Into the inner end of Chenal du Nord Ouest.

Pilot: Optional. Pilot boards at Narcissus buoy, otherwise Harbour Master indicates anchorage by radio.

Anchorages: There are 8 anchorage berths, 1 for tankers with a depth of 6.0-10m and 7 anchorage berths with depths of 8.0-12m, for general cargo vessels.
