Our University

I am a first year student of the Gomel State Technical University named after Pavel Sukhoy. It was founded on the basis of Gomel Polytechnic in 1998.

Gomel Polytechnic occupies three buildings in which there are numerous tutorial rooms, lecture halls, workshops and laboratories equipped with up-to-date devices. Students have at their disposal a computing centre, a library with a reading hall and some large modem hostels. The University provides good facilities for studies and research work.

About 300 professors, assistant-professors and lecturers give lectures and tutorials, carry on in different branches of knowledge. At present there are more than 5500 students at our University. They study at 5 faculties: the Machine-building Faculty, the Economics and Humanities, the Technological Faculty, the Power Engineering Faculty and the Automation and Control Systems Faculty.. They train students in different specialities: machine-tools and cutters; electric supply of industrial enterprises in towns and villages; know-how of machine-building; hydraulics and pneumatics; mechanical working of metals; casting machines and equipment; electric drive; heat-power engineering; industrial electronics; economics and organization of labour; marketing; management and banks; packing; exploitation of oil-fields; agricultural machines and others.

There is a correspondence department at our University. The students of this department combine their work with their studies.

The course of studies lasts five years at a day-time department and six years at the correspondence department. The academic year begins in September and ends in June. Students take their exams twice a year: in January and in June. Those who pass exams well get monthly allowances. During the terms they attend lectures, practical classes, seminars, carry out laboratory tests. Students have vacations twice a year. It is very interesting to study at our University. Our students are taught general and special subjects, such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, foreign languages, social sciences and many special subjects. The

first year is usually very difficult for students because they can't plan their time yet.

Training specialists at our University combines theoretical studies with practical training. Students get practical skills in well-equipped laboratories.

There are students' scientific societies where they do research work in close contact with the teaching staff. Every year students' scientific conferences take place at the University where our students make interesting reports. They write their term papers and graduation theses on the problems of their research.

Our students also take an active part in the social life. Many of them are active members of sport clubs,a choir, music and theatre societies.
