The programs for rehabilitation

When entering the correction institution, the offender is placed in available programs in accordance with the diagnostic evaluation. Most institutions offer varying degrees of programs and services which include the following:

1. Health and medical care.

2. Counseling.

3. Academic education.

4. Recreation.

5. Vocational training.

6. Religious study.

7. Visiting privileges and many other special interest activities.

These programs and services combine to form the treatment component of institutional confinement. Although most programs look good on paper, they generally serve only a small proportion of

Some progress has been made, however, in those jurisdictions which have instituted a fourth type of confinement—community-based correctional institutions. The current trend is to deemphasize the use of large prisons and use smaller, community-based facilities as well as halfway houses, pre-release centers, and work-release and home-furlough programs. This movement is a result of the fact that experts believe that only a small percentage of prison inmates require maximum security and that most can be more effectively rehabilitated in community-based facilities.

More than 70% of all offenders released from correctional institutions reenter the community via the parole system. Parole is a process whereby an inmate is selected for early release and serves the remainder of a sentence in the community under the supervision of a parole officer. It is the predominant form of release for prison inmates and exists in all states and in the federal government.
