1 Higher education plays a major role in the development of science and culture of any country. All citizens have equal opportunities and right to education is constitutionally guaranteed.

There are many different types of educational establishments in our country: pedagogical, technological, agricultural, medical institutes and dramatic and fine arts institutes.

Admission to higher education institution is provided by a general secondary school leaving certificate. The applicants must sit competitive entrance examinations. Higher education at state institutions is free of charge for those who pass entrance examinations; those who achieve fairly high marks but fail competition may be admitted but must pay tuition fees.

As a rule the term of study in most higher schools is 4-5 years, Medical institutes – 6 years.

2 I’m a first-year student of Gomel State University named after F. Scorina (1969). About 10 000 students are trained at 12 faculties, 50 chairs in 27 specialties and 67 specializations.

We have many different departments: the Department of Physics, Mathematics, History, Biology, Economics, Geology and Geography, Physical Culture, Judicial and some others.

Our University is large enough to offer top quality modern facilities for students. 4 forms of training are offered at Gomel State University: daytime training, correspondence courses, preparatory section, postgraduate courses.

Our University trains future teachers of different subjects, engineers and research workers.

According to the dictionary, the Latin word “Student” means “One devoted to learning”. Indeed, the chief task of the student is to learn. Attendance at all lectures, seminars and practical classes is compulsory for all students. At the end of each term the students take test on practical work and examinations on theory. Most of the students pass exams successfully.

3 I’m a student of the Physics Department. After finishing school I took my entrance examinations, passed them well and was admitted.

The academic year begins, as a rule, on the 1st of September and ends in June. It lasts 10 months. The academic year has 2 terms: the autumn term and the spring term. Each term ends with examinations which take place in January and in June. During the academic year students work hard.

Students go on vacation twice a year: in winter and in summer.

Classes at our University are held at two shifts: from 8.00 a.m. till 1.45 p.m. and 2.15 p.m. till 7.20 p.m. Usually we have three or four periods, that is 6-8 classes a day.

During the classes we have 10- or 20-minute break when we go to the canteen and have dinner. There is always a great choice of nice things to eat although they aren’t always healthy.

4 The Department of Physics trains specialists for different branches of industry and research laboratories, and teachers for secondary schools, technical secondary schools and institutes. The Department provides a broad engineering education.

In the first year all the students take the same courses. They study mechanics, electricity and magnetism, a foreign language and other subjects. A proper understanding of physical sciences needs a good knowledge of mathematics. Therefore, the Department gives particular consideration to the teaching of mathematics. All the students study mathematical analysis, analytical geometry, algebra and mathematical physics. In the second year the students are taught the principles of optics.

In the third year the specialization begins. The students can specialize in theoretical physics, nuclear physics, biophysics, electronics, physics of solids, physics of semiconductors, spectroscopy and plasma physics.

A student life is very rich and various. The University provides students not with training and studying only. Students may participate in different cultural and sport activities where one can not only prove himself but stand for the honour of the university. University opens many opportunities for everyone although one may easily be expelled from it nevertheless it changes us and our life forever.
