Higher Education in Great Britain.

There are now more than 100 universisties in the United Kingdom. All british universities are private. Student have to pay fees and living coasts may receive a personal grant from the local autority of the place where he lives. British universitied can be devided into three main groups:

1)the old universities

2)the republick universities  as well as London university

3)the new universities ,founded since the second world war.

In the group of the old universities Oxford and Cambridge are the oldest universities. They are very prestigious among the British young people. Each of them has about 12.000 students. The typical academic prorams for University in Great Britain are composed of a varying number of courses of subject .The academic obligations for each subject fall into three broad types

1)Lectures, at wich attendance is not always compulsory

2)Tutotials, through individual of group discussion; and

3) Writing essays under the tutorials directions, ensure focused and in-depth understanding of the subject.

Examinations on each subject require the students to consolidate his knowledge of the subject , which he has gained through lectures, discussiont and a great deal of independent study. These three categories of academic activity- lectures, tutorials and examinations- provide the means by wich students prepare them selves in specialized field of knowledge in British universities.

The course of study at a universitylasts three of four years. In general bachelor’s degree- is given to the students who pass their examination at the end of the course:

Bachelor of Arts, for history, philosophy, language, bachelor of Sciense ,Commerce or music and so on.

One who gets a degree may have a better job, higher pay or post-graduate studies. in 1971 the Open University was get up for the people who do not have time to study at a conventional university. The course of study at the open universities lasts six of eight years. Some British universities also have

extra-mural departments.
