On the Banks of Banking

Warm up

Ask students to read the dialogue on the opposite page. Select two students to act as Diane and Joe in the short scene. Subsequently, have students explain their answers to the following questions:

·  Why do people, such as Diane, believe that using the services of a bank is unnecessary?

·  How would you respond to what Diane said?

·  Which criticism about banks is the most valid? Do you agree with Diane that money orders and check cashers are good substitutes for a checking account?

·  If you represented Diane’s neighborhood bank, how would you respond to Diane’s criticisms?

·  What question does the short scene with Diane and Joe raise about the necessity of using banks? (“How necessary is it for most people to use the services of a bank?”)

Objective objectives.

Start introducing objectives of the class to the students and ask them to prolong the list.

After completing this project you will be able to:

·  Discuss the variety of services that different banks offer

·  Compare and contrast some of the major savings products offered by banks to their customers

·  Examine the benefits and responsibilities of having a checking account

·  Explain the reasons why so many people are unbanked and suggest strategies to encourage them to open bank accounts

Ask students which of the objectives interests them most and if you had an expert on banking in class, what questions would they ask about the topic?

Project work Explain that in this activity students will be required to complete a project about the topics referred to the objectives. After that, they will have a chance to show what they have learned by creating a set of public service announcements for:

1)  Radio

2)  Television

3)  Newspapers

Before getting down to project work have students to explain their answers to the questions

·  What do you know about the features of a good radio public service announcement?

·  What do you know about the features of a good television public service announcement?

·  What do you know about the features of a good newspaper public service announcement?

Discuss with the class your specifications and expectations for the projects, including deadlines, criteria for grading their public service announcements, and format for acknowledgements.

Explain to students that most of the information for their projects should come from reading the bank of information and fulfilling tutorials. Divide the class into four groups. Assign each group a different one of the following abstracts and related websites to read:

Overview of Banking Services 1st American People's Bank.doc/Bank of information; Banking Services (http://www.belinvestbank.by/en/banking-services/ Bank of information folder)

Savings Products http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Savings_accounts,/ Bank of information folder

Checking Accounts http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-checking-account.htm /Bank of information folder

The Unbanked

From the Federal Reserve Board.doc /Bank of information

After completing their readings, have students explain their answers to the following:

·  Describe what you found on the page(s) you have read.

·  What did you learn about the topics from your reading?

·  What other questions do you have about the project?

Summary:

Ask students to explain their answer about the following question:

What do you hope to learn by completing this project?

Warm up

Diane, walking on the street, sees her friend Joe and calls after him

Diane: Hey, Joe! Where are you going in such a hurry?

Joe: I’m going to the bank to put some money in my account.

Diane: Why waste your time going there? Putting money in a bank is only for rich people.

Joe: I was always told it’s the safest place to keep your valuables.

Diane: I don’t like banks. The people who work there are so unfriendly. Those bank guards look like the secret police from my home country. Every time I ask a question, the teller looks annoyed. On top of that, the bank charges a fee for almost every service it provides. You even have to wait on line and complete lots of paper work to get your own money out.

Joe: I need a checking account to pay my bills. What do you do when you have to write or cash a check?

Diane: When I want to pay a bill, I either pay in cash or get a money order—it’s just as good. To cash acheck, I go to a check casher. There’s one on almost every block in the neighborhood. Where I live, there’s only one bank and it is six blocks from my house. Joe, I once thought that you were the smart one.

Project 1: Create a Set of Public Service Announcements for Radio

On an audio cassette, create a series of three public service announcements (PSAs) for radio running about one minute each to convince unbanked people to open a bank account. These announcements should refer to what you learned about savings products, checking accounts, other banking services, and the reasons why so many people remain unbanked.

To prepare for your project, you’ll need to access the four tutorials below. Follow the directions that come with the tutorials. After completing this preparation, you’ll be ready to start creating your PSAs.
