(13)At the present time, nuclear power plants provide electric power to many areas of the world. (14)Whether or not the use of nuclear power will increase or decrease will depend on our finding safe methods to dispose of the nuclear wastes.
(15)Many people question the safety of using nuclear energy. (16)There are hazards associated with using nuclear energy. (17)One of them is disposing of nuclear wastes.(18) Nuclear wastes contain radioactive material which can remain dangerous for a million years. (19)To protect people from harmful radiation, these wastes must be stored. (20)Some nuclear wastes are buried in the ground in concrete vaults.(21)However, waste disposal areas must be monitored to make sure there are no leaks in these vaults.
(22)Because of this waste problem and other problems related to nuclear power, some people think the environment is needlessly harmed.

Acid Rain
(1)We have always needed rain for good crops and a sufficient water supply. (2) Is acid rain the same as ordinary rain? (3)No, acid rain is a rather new phenomenon, and it is not helpful like ordinary rain. (4)Acid rain occurs when ordinary rain passes through atmosphere polluted with sulfur and nitrogen oxides, and picks up these chemicals.(5)In small amounts, these oxides are important in nature to nourish plant and aquatic life. (6)However, industries, auto exhausts, and other outlets that burn fossil fuel have disrupted this delicate balance and created an overabundance of these two oxides.
(7)The falling rain mixes with these pollutants to produce a form of precipitation that is a mixture of sulfur acid, nitric acid, and water. (8)We call this precipitation acid rain, but in reality it includes all forms of precipitation, including acid snow, acid sleet, acid hail, and even acid fog.
