These questions use relatively common words, but are asking for its contextual use, which is usually a second or third definition or figurative meaning.

We have NOT seen these used as vocabulary testers in ETS tests, though such treatment of VIC is common in TPR materials. In ETS VICs they do NOT ask about difficult or high-level words that the student is unlikely to know the meaning of unless they use the context.
