4.1.3  Cross-Connect Capacity Expansion and Upgrade

In initial stages, you can use the GXCH board of the OptiX OSN 9500 to construct an MAN of small traffic, thus completing the network with lower cost. With the increase of traffic, the system cross-connect board can be upgraded to the EXCH board of larger capacity to increase the system capacity.

The OptiX OSN 9500 provides two kinds of higher order cross-connect boards: GXCH and EXCH. Table 4-2 shows the cross-connect and access capacities of two boards.

The upgrade of cross-connect capacity can enhance the system access capability and increase the number of 20 G access slot from 8 to 32. Moreover, the upgrade needs not change the bus configuration of the backplane, because the host supports thirty-two 20 G slots and eight 10 G slots automatically.

2.  Case Description

In the example shown in chapter 3, if the cross-connect capacity is insufficient with the GXCH, you can upgrade the cross-connect board to meet the requirement. That is, upgrade the GXCH board in slot XCH to EXCH board.

3.  Procedure

 Caution:

(1) The host is compatible with both GXCH and EXCH. However, GXCH and EXCH are not allowed to co-exist for a long time, except the temporary coexistence during upgrading.

(2) If the boards are configured with the cross-connect capacity of 720 G, the cross-connect board cannot be changed to the GXCH board.

Step

Operations

1

Prepare two EXCH boards. Check the working status of the expansion board and check whether the software is compliant.

2

Learn about the working status of two GXCH boards by querying on NM or observing board indicators.

3

Send a command to upgrade the type of the cross-connect board.

4

Replace the standby GXCH board with an EXCH board.

5

When the EXCH board starts to work, deliver services to it through NM.

6

After EXCH works in normal status, switch it to be the active board forcedly through NM.

7

Use EXCH to replace the other standby GXCH in the same way.

8

On NM, check whether the service is normal. If so, the upgrade succeeds.

4.2  Network Expansion and Upgrade

When the existing equipment in a single station fails to meet the increasing requirement, add new NEs to offer more capacity for service incremental.

The expansion is similar to the operation of creating NEs, but the expansion may use the existing cabinet or extension subrack, or connect the new NE to existing cables and fibers. For expansion method, you can refer to the operation of creating an NE.
