The main machinery is a gas-turbine two-shaft type, with a total power of 45,000 hp and comprises autonomous propulsion and augmented powerplants. The propulsion pow-erplants are mounted on suspended platforms via two-stage antivibration mounting. To improve the economy at low speeds, provision is made for a propulsion reduction gear unit, enabling one engine to drive two shafts. The escort ship can gain a full speed of 32 knots. Her cruising range (at a maximum fuel capacity) is 4,000 miles.

The Project 1135 escort ship is fitted with a qualitatively new and fully automated ship roll and pitch stabilizers UKA-135, with no analogs in the world. The stabilizers decrease the ship roll and pitch 3.5-4 times.

During the ship's design, particular attention was drawn to a decrease of a ship's hydroacoustic field and sonar operation noise level. A range of measures (two-stage antivibration mounting of the main machinery, vibration-clamping coatings, low-noise propellers, etc.), developed by the Northern Design Bureau, jointly with Krylov Central Research Institute, enabled the ship to boast high acoustic characteristics, whereby the Project 1135 escort ships were at one time the best surface warships of the home Navy.

The high sea-going abilities and other service properties of the escort ships enabled the Navy to successfully use them for combat service in virtually all regions of the world ocean. In terms of characteristics, the Project 1135 escort ships differed favorably from their American counterparts, the Garcia class escort ships (frigates), due to the inclusion of the air-defense missile system and long-range ASW complex.

Udaloy-class

The 1155 design ship is intended for antisubmarine warfare and protection of surface combatant forces and convoys against submarine and air attacks.

The basic performance characteristics of the 1155 design large antisubmarine ship are listed in the table.

The ship has a long-forecastle hull with high sides in the forebody to compensate for a small ascent on the wave owing to a developed bulb, with the stem sharply raking to decrease possible damage to the bulb antenna cap by the anchors, with falling out sides to decrease radar conspicuousness, and without narrowing the waterline towards the aft end to accommodate two helicopter hangars and a runway.

In terms of layout and components, the gas turbine propulsion plant is made as a single unit driving two propeller shafts and including two cruise gas turbine engines with a provision for each engine to separately drive both shafts and two boosting gas turbine engines.

The ship's gas turbine propulsion plant and electric power supply system are controlled with the aid of an automatic control system from special remote control stations. To replenish fuel, victuals and other stocks on the move at sea by the "beam method", the ship is provided with two special devices on each side. To increase seaworthiness, improve conditions for the armament and provide comfort for the crew, the ship is equipped with a pair of extendable stabilizing fins, decreasing roll amplitude more than three times, and with bilge keels.

During ship design work, great care has been taken to ensure a good habitability for the personnel in various weather conditions and climates. Officers are accommodated in single and double-berthed cabins, noncoms in two and four-berthed ones, the men occupy 12 and 14-berthed rooms. Provision is made for recreation, sports and service spaces. There are distilling units aboard the ship to replenish fresh water reserves.

The ship's armament may be controlled by integrated information-and-control system receiving information from external sources or autonomously. In addition, most ship-carried weapons represent systems, in other words they are designed as an integral whole intended to execute certain important combat function of the ship.
