Tell Me a Story (21 traditional stories from the British Isles dramatised by J.D.Graham), страница 18

That evening, Tom went back to the farmhouse.   The farmer’s wife looked at him angrily, and at once she began to laugh.   And she laughed until Tom said:  “Stop!   That’s enough!”   And she stopped laughing at once.   The farmer’s wife was frightened by what had happened.   The next day she went to see her great friend, the next-door neighbour, and told him about Tom.   She said:  “He ought to be punished.   I want you to punish him.   I want you to take a big stick and hit him with it.”

So the neighbour took a big stick and went to find Tom.   But Tom picked up his magic flute and started to play it.   And as soon as he heard the flute, the neighbour started to dance, and he danced and danced and couldn’t stop.   At last Tom stopped playing, and the neighbour stopped dancing.   Then the neighbour went to the judge and complained about Tom.   He said to the judge:  “You ought to stop him.   You ought to punish him.   You ought to put him in prison.”   The judge said:  “I must hear what he has to say first.”   He said to Tom:  “Come and see me tomorrow and tell me your story.”

First the judge asked the farmer’s wife to tell her story but when she looked at Tom angrily, she started to laugh and laugh until Tom stopped her.  Then the judge asked the neighbour to tell him about Tom’s magic flute.   He asked Tom to give him a demonstration..   So Tom played his flute and everyone started to dance - including the judge.   They danced and danced and couldn’t stop until Tom stopped playing his flute.

The people all wanted the judge to punish Tom and put him in prison.   But Tom just played his flute and everyone began to dance again until they promised to do what Tom wanted.   He said:  “I want the farmer’s wife to be nice to me from now on.   I want everyone to be nice to me.”   And everyone was nice to Tom after that and everyone lived happily ever after.

15 - THE STORY OF HENRY AND HENRIETTA

This is a story about a brother and sister called Henry and Henrietta.   One day they went out to pick some strawberries.   They put them into a basket.   But soon Henrietta started to eat them.   “Stop it, Henrietta,” said Henry.   “You’re eating my share as well as your own.”   But Henrietta wouldn’t stop eating, and Henry got very annoyed.   “If you don’t stop eating my share of the fruit,” said Henry, “I’ll go and get a stick and hit you and make you stop.”

So Henry went to a tree to cut down a stick.   “Hello, tree,” he said.   “Hello”, said the tree, “and how are you today?”   “I’m looking for a stick to hit Henrietta with,” said Henry.   “What do you want to hit her for?” asked the tree.   “She’s eating my share of the fruit,” said Henry.   “Well, I’m afraid I can’t help you,” said the tree.   “If you want a stick, you’ll have to find an axe to cut it.”

So Henry went to the axe.   And the axe said:  “If you want to cut down a stick, you’ll have to find a stone to sharpen me.   But the stone said:  “If you want to sharpen the axe, you’ll have to get some water to put on me to make me wet.”

The stream said:  “If you want some water, you’ll have to find a deer to swim across me.”

The deer said:  “I don’t feel like swimming today.   I wouldn’t swim that stream today unless a dog chased me through it.”

The dog said:  “I’ll chase the deer, if you get some butter to rub on my paws.”

The butter said:  “If you want some butter, you’ll have to find a mouse to take some of me to the dog.”

The mouse said:  “I don’t feel very energetic today.   If you want me to get some butter, you’ll have to find a cat to chase me.”

The cat said:  “If you want me to chase the mouse, you’ll have to give me some milk.”

The cow said:  “If you get me some hay, I’ll give you some milk.”

The farmworker said:  “If you get me some bread from the farmer’s wife, I’ll give you some hay for the cow.”

The farmer’s wife said:  “If you want some bread, you’ll have to get some water for the flour.”
