At present a lot of people are seriously concerned about the drastic changes in the environment. We have faced a great number of problems which may soon turn our life upside down. Mostly due to human activity a lot of species are put on the brink of extinction, the ozone layer is being depleted. The global climate change is ensuing, the Earth gets warmer, and consequently, the sea-level rises. The adverse effects applied to the planet might soon become dramatic endangering the humanity.
In fact the Earth now resembles me a half-squeezed lemon. We’ve already wasted pretty much of resources and other mineral wealth. The estimated rates of the supplies of the two most valuable resources – oil and gas – are going to satisfy the mankind’s requirements for up to __ years. However, we are still dependent on nonrecoverable resources and their consumption is not going to decline.
Even though burning fossil fuels for energy is very unsustainable, it’s still in use and occupies the first place in worldwide energy production. Well apparently it is followed by the increasing greenhouse effect, global climate change, sea-level rise and many other unobvious consequences. But what is more is the air pollution itself. Incorporations, heating plants inject the fumes into the atmosphere making the air inappropriate for inhaling. Smog is a terrific problem of many cities. Somehow the problem is tried to be solved through ruling the plants out of the cities. Well, it may make the air within them a bit clearer, but the general impact on the environment lingers the same. Not only people fall victims to polluted air, but every creature alive feels its pernicious influence.
The activity of plants is a single matter. One of the consequences they produce is dumping sewage wastes into aquatic settings. For sure, there are some sewage treatment systems installed, but no system can entirely clear all the sewage. So lakes and rivers become polluted anyway. No need to mention, marine habitats simply die out because of the human activity. Besides, contaminated water becomes inappropriate for any other kind of household activity. Still, we can hardly expect any ultimate solution to this problem.
Sustainability is obviously not a principal concern of the society. We tend to exploit the nature, not caring about restoring it. So, litter dumps, excessive fertilizing can’t but affects the Earth in a strongly negative way. The application of pesticides and fertilizers is widely used in agriculture, the farmers need a greater yield, but no one cares about soil contamination. And certainly, to site a landfill is a lot more convenient than put a lot of effort to recycling the wastes. For such an approach we’ll have to pay off.
So I can’t but mention several other sources of contamination. For instance, noise contamination is a cause of nervous system disorders. Light pollution, is excessive or obtrusive artificial light.
So we pursue the technological advances with the nature in price. It’s obvious that we need to take some measure reducing the above mentioned sources of pollution. Otherwise, as Green peace motto runs, When the Last Tree Is Cut Down, the Last Fish Eaten, and the Last Stream Poisoned, You Will Realize That You Cannot Eat Money. I think it greatly conveys the idea that it’s high time we started to act, as otherwise it may be late very soon.
