Dave and I are both from big families,
we both work in a bank, and we both enjoy football. We often go to the cinema
together. So, we’ve got a lot in common.
Marta’s from a big family, and mine is
medium sized. We go walking together, and we both like skiing. She’s a doctor,
and I’m a nurse. So Marta and I have got quite a lot in common.
Luca’s from a very big family – he’s
got ten brothers and sisters, and I’ve got one brother. He does a lot of sport
and I don’t like sport at all. I stay in and watch TV and Luca ‘s always out,
having a good time. So Luca and I haven’t got much in common.

tune in / listen carefully
B Helen,
(hmhm) do you know David Roberts? He’s got an office on the next floor.
H I’m
not sure. What does he look like?
B Er,
well, late twenties, I think, very tall with long, blond hair. You know, he’s
the one who usually comes to work on, on a mountain bike.
H Hmm.
B I,
er, often see him in the restaurant at lunchtime.
H No,
I don’t think I know him. Why do you want to know, Bob?
B Well, the thing is, I’m
looking for somewhere to live at the moment, (yeah) and David sent this e-mail
to everyone in the office. He’s got this free room in his house, and it’s got a
garden, and it’s in a really convenient area for me.
H Oh. Well, how amazing.
Erm, what’s wrong with the flat you’re in?
B Well, it’s fine, it’s
very nice but it’s a long way from work, and it’s very expensive.
H Hmm.
B But I just wanted to
see if you knew him, ‘cos I want to see what he’s like before I contact him
about the room.
H I see. Well, erm, I
don’t really know him, but I tell you what, my friend Margaret knows everyone
in the building, so I’m sure I could ask her about him.
B Oh, that would be
great, er, thank you.
H Erm, when do you want to
know by?
B Soon as possible.
H All
right, no problem.

listening challenge
H Margaret,
do you know a guy called David Roberts?
M Oh,
yes, I know him, I know him quite well, actually; well we used to work together
a few months ago, see.
H Ahh.
M Er,
why are you asking?
H Well,
a friend of mine, Bob, is thinking of taking a room in his house (ahh) so, I
just wanted to know what he was like.
M Yeah.
Erm, I don’t really like him all that much, to be honest with you.
H Hmm.
Why? What…
M He’s
a workaholic – you know, work, work, work. He’s very ambitious, but basically,
he’s boring.
H Oh.
M He
has no sense of humour whatsoever.
H Really?
M Hmm.
H Oh,
I don’t like men who are very serious, erm, and I’m sure Bob doesn’t.
M No,
well, nor do I, and also, he’s a chain smoker – doesn’t stop smoking.
H Oh,
no, Bob hates people who smoke. Oh, dear.
