Communicating

Using a browser, you can send and receive messages (e-mail) to and from friends and family located almost anywhere in the world. You can also join and participate in discussions and debates on a wide variety of special-interest topics. These discussion groups are called newsgroups.

Searching

You can buy things, plan on doing some research for a course paper and much more on the Web. The challenge is finding or searching for the information you want. All you need is a computer connected to the Internet and a browser.

Creating Web Sites

A Web site shows information about something or someone. Today, more people and organizations are creating web sites. Web sites can be created using a browser and a specialized language called Hypertext Markup Language (HTML). The two most widely used browsers are Microsoft's Internet Explorer and Netscape's Communicator.

A spreadsheet is an electronic worksheet used to organize, manipulate, and graph data.

Menus

Almost all software packages have menus to present commands. Typically, the menus are displayed in a menu bar at the top of the screen. When one of the menu items is selected, a pull-down menu appears. This is a list of commands associated with the selected menu.

Toolbars

Toolbars typically are below the menu bar. They contain buttons and menus that provide quick access to commonly used commands. The standard toolbar and the formatting toolbar are common to most applications.

4.  Presentation Graphics

Presentation graphics are used to combine a variety of visual objects to create attractive, visually interesting presentations.

These programs can produce overhead transparencies, 35-mm slides, electronic on-screen presentations, called slide shows, and support materials for both the speaker and the audience. Each page of a presentation, commonly referred to as a slide, can include many elements, including text, charts, drawn objects, and shapes, as well as clip art, movies, sounds, and art created in other programs.

You can use presentation graphics to create class presentations. These programs are excellent tools to communicate a message or to persuade people, such as fellow students, instructors, supervisors, or clients. Presentation graphics programs are often used by marketing or sales people as well as many others.

Системное ПО

Системное ПО состоит из утилит, драйверов устройств, языковых трансляторов и операционной системы. Операционная система управляет ресурсами, обеспечивает пользовательский интерфейс, и запускает приложения.

Системное ПО имеет дело с физическими сложностями аппаратного обеспечения компьютера. Оно состоит из четырёх видов программ: утилит, драйверов устройств, языковых трансляторов и ОС.

Утилиты также известны как служебные программы, исполняющие особые задачи, связанные с управление ресурсами компьютера или файлами. Они включают программы, помогающие пользователям устанавливать проблемы аппаратного обеспечения, определять местоположение потерянных файлов и выполнять резервное копирование данных.

Драйвера устройств  - специальные программы спроектированы таким образом, чтобы позволять устройствам сообщаться с покоем компьютерной системы.

Языковые трансляторы преобразовывают программные команды, написанные программистами на язык, который компьютеры понимают и обрабатывают.

Операционные системы

У каждого компьютера есть ОС и каждая операционная система выполняет три основные функции: управление ресурсами, обеспечение пользовательского интерфейса и запуск приложений.

Ресурсы. Эти программы координируют все компьютерные ресурсы включая клавиатуру, мышь, принтер, монитор, устройства хранения и память.
