1)  Today, the railways are facing serious competition from airplanes and automobiles in the field of passenger transportation. In order to win in this race the railways must be able to offer passengers attractive services such as short travel time, good ride comfort etc. The most attractive one is short travel time which means speed-up of the train.

2)  Passenger train speeds have shown a remarkable rise in the last two decades. From the introduction of 210 km/h running by the Japan National Railways in 1965 to the operation of TGV in France at 260 km/h from 1981 – with a further increase to 300 km/h in prospect – railways have issued serious challenge to short distance air traffic.

3)  When people speak of high speed rail passenger systems nowadays, attention is usually focussed on the Japan Shinkansen lines and the French TGV Paris-South East  line. But by the mid-1990s there were seven lines in Western Europe offering intercity service at 230 km/h or more.
