The different conveyor styles accommodate the special requirements of various product types and applications. Bulky products such as coal, grain, or gravel are best handled by belt- or screw-type conveyors. Many automated production assembly lines use combinations of overhead, slat, wheel, and roller conveyors to feed parts to assembly stations and move the product from one station to another. In warehouses that have a high volume of throughput, dragline conveyors mounted overhead or in the floor serve as the motive power for the movement of palletized and nonpalletized goods along fixed paths.
An advantage of conveyors is the capability of combining sorting with goods movement. In some high-volume warehouses elaborate networks of conveyors have been set up much like railroad classification yards. As portions of orders are picked from the various storage areas of the warehouse, completed orders are directed onto designated spurs from a remote-control location.
Cranes. The third important type of materials-handling equipment is the crane. The unique characteristic of the crane is that It is not bound to the surface as materials handling trucks, and in many cases conveyors, are. Cranes typically operate over the storage area and therefore do not use the aisle space required by other methods. They also are capable of moving extremely heavy loads with agility and safety. Cranes are particularly popular for the handling of basic raw materials (for example, steel and aluminum), loading and unloading ocean-going freight, and handling the transfer of goods onto and off of rail and truck equipment.
The stacker crane is one type of material-handling equipment deserving special mentior the amount of attention given to it in recent years. The stacker crane is the heart of
-ted warehouse that is designed to conserve space and reduce labor. It is an electronically controlled platform used to store and retrieve goods, usually palletized, from designated storage slots in the rack tower. Much progress has been made toward controlling cranes by computer and creating the totally automated, minimum-labor warehouse,
