7. "E7" (Alfeite) (1.25nm SSE), reserved for Naval base traffic.

 Prohibited anchorage areas: In addition to local prohibitions which are detailed in the relevant parts of the text the main areas where anchoring is prohibited are centred in the following positions:

 Entrance protection area, 40°38.5'N 009°17.5'W.

 Belem-Trafaria and Belem-Porto Brandao ferry safety and protection area, 40°41.0'N 009°12.5'W.

 Passing area E of Ponte 25 de Abril and ferry safety and protection area Lisboa to Cacilhas and Barreiro, 40°41.5'N 009°09.0'W. Under certain circumstances this area may be used providing the visibility is more than 2nm, there is a pilot on board and the stay is less than 6 hours.

 Tidal range and flow: Range 4.4m.

 Dock density: 1035.

 Weather: Prevailing winds: NW'ly-SW'ly.

 Principal navigation aids: Forte de Sao Juliao Lighthouse, (white square tower, 24m in height), (38°40'N 009°19'W).

 Forte Bugio Lighthouse, (round tower on the centre of the fortress, 14m in height), (38°40'N 009°18'W).

 Major Light: Guia Light, (white octagonal tower and dwelling, 28m in height), (38°42'N 009°27'W).

 Santa Marta Light, (white square tower, blue bands, 20m in height), (38°41'N 009°25'W).

 Chibata Light, (occasional), (lantern on water tower), (38°39'N 009°13'W).

 Charts: BA 3264, 3263, 3635. Admiralty Pilot NP67.

 Traffic schemes: None.

 Restrictions: Entry for vessels with drafts between 11m and 13.7m depends on the sea state.

 Ponte 25 de Abril, a road suspension bridge, spans the river 6.5nm above the ent rance. The bridge is supported on two main pillars, 190m in height spaced approx 1,000m apart, which provide a vertical clearance of 70m under the central span at HW.

 Fishing is strictly prohibited in the entrance channels.

 Speeds and safe distances: Within the port when E of the meridian of Alges (009°14'W) any speeds in excess of 10kn are forbidden except where the min manoeuvring speed of the vessel is above this speed. Vessels without a pilot on board are restricted to a speed of 5kn when E of the meridian of Torre de Belem (009°13'W) and within 150m of the shore. Small craft must not exceed a speed of 5kn when within the coastal protection zone (a 300m wide strip measured from the LW line). Navigation within 150m of dock entrances, wharves, piers, terminals and river walls is prohibited and Pontal de Cacilhas (38°41'N 009°09'W) must be given a clearance of 500m. Above Doca da Marinha (38°42.3'N 009°07.8'W), in the approach to Canal de Cabo Ruivo, the N bank of the river should be given a clearance of 1,000m.

 Tugs: There are 3 tugs of 420-2,160hp available. Private tugs available if required.

 Coast guard: No coastguard available.

BERTHS AND CARGO

 Names/Nos:

 General cargo/Bulk berths: General cargo berths are located in the following areas:

1. Terminal for foodstuff and cold storage situated S of Alcantara Dock, with a quay length of 300m and depths alongside of 7-8.0m;

2. Xabregas Bonded Depot, with a quay length of 515m and a depth alongside of 8.0m; and

3. Santos Terminal, with a quay length of 464m and a depth alongside of 6.5m.

 The port also operates a multi-purpose berth in Alcantara with a quay length of 465m and depths alongside of 8-10m and Xabregas-Poco do Bispo Wharf with a quay length of 1,240m and depths alongside of 6m-7.0m.

 There are 2 bulk grain terminals:

1. The Poco do Bispo Grain Terminal and the Trafaria Grain Terminal, which have capacities of 110,000t and 200,000t and depths of 8.0m and 14-17m respectively.

2. The Palenca Oil Seeds Terminal with depths varying between 12-15m, can handle bulk vessels up to 80,000dwt and has a storage capacity of 90,000t.

 Container berths: The port possesses extensive container facilities.

The Santa Apolonia Container Terminal has 870m of berths with depth alongside of 8.5m.

2. The Alcantara Container Terminal has 630m of berths and depths alongside varying between 10.5-13m.

 Tanker berths: There are six tanker terminals with lengths varying between 30m and 460m and depths alongside varying between 8.0m and 14m.

 Ro-Ro berths: There is 1 Ro-Ro terminal, located at W end of the multi-purpose berth in Alcantara, with a capacity of 100t.

 Passengers/cruise berths: Rocha Conde d'Obidos Passenger Terminal with quay length of 450m and a depth alongside of 8.0m.

 Santa Apolonia Passenger Terminal with a quay length of 400m and a depth alongside of 6.5m.

 Alcantara Passenger Terminal with a quay length of 465m and a depth alongside of 10m.

 Facilities: Container terminals:

 Santa Apolonia Container Terminal: Total area of 8ha, seven of which are used for container stacking and handling with a storage capacity of 3,500teu. It operates three ship to shore gantry cranes with the following general characteristics:

One with a lifting capacity (spreader/general load) of 30/35t; reach (sea side/land side) of 26/19,5m; lifting height of 17m; 2 with a lifting capacity (spreader/general load) of 35/40t; reach (sea side/land side) of 35/24m; lifting height of 25m.
