POLYCLINICS

Our republic has established a wide network of medical institutions to protect the health of our people. One of such medical institutions is the polyclinic.

If a person falls ill, they will ring up their local polyclinic and call in a doctor. When the condition isn't very poor, and they have no fever, they will go to the local polyclinic and a physician will examine them there.

Many specialists including physicians, neurologists, surgeons and others work at the polyclinic. During the medical examination a physician usually asks his patients what they complain of and according to the complaints carries on the medical examination. A physician listens to the patient's heart and lungs and measures their blood pressure and, if necessary, asks the patient to take their temperature. The laboratory findings which include blood analysis, the analysis of urine and other tests help a physician to make a correct diagnosis and administer a proper treatment.

In addition to their consulting hours at the polyclinic local physicians go out to the calls to examine those patients who are seriously ill and whose condition is bad. Such sick persons receive a sick-leave. They usually follow a bed regimen.

Any physician of the polyclinic knows their patients very well because they treat only a definite number of patients.

At the local polyclinic every patient has their personal patient's card which is filled in by the physician. Everything about the patient — the diagnosis of the disease, the administrations made by the doctor, the course of the disease, the changes in the patient's condition after the treatment — are written down in the card. If it is necessary, a nurse will come to the patient’s house to give him or her the administered injections or carry out any of the doctor's administrations.

All our people receive the treatment free of charge

                MEDICAL EXAMINATION

Main emphasis in our country is laid on prevention or prophylactics. The saying has it that "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". Periodical medical examinations are practiced in our college, since a thorough examination helps to nip a disease in the bud. So every year we have to go to the local polyclinic for a medical examination. we have to visit several doctors, among them are: a dentist, an oculist, a surgeon, a neurologist, the otolaryngologist, the physician or GP and others. We should also have some laboratory tests done. Besides, they may find it necessary that we should be X-rayed.

To tell the truth I hate visiting the dentist. When I see the dentist's chair with the drill, I feel dizzy. When you sit down in the chair, the dentist begins to examine your teeth. He may put in a stop or if the tooth is bad the dentist extracts it.

When you go to the oculist, he examines your eyesight. You sit down opposite the chart with letters of different sizes and read out the letters. If you wear glasses, you should take them with you.

Next is the otolaryngologist who sits with his reflector pushed up against his forehead. He examines your ears, throat and nose. If you have an earache or a shooting pain in your ear or your throat is sore, the doctor will give you a good piece of advice and write out a prescription and you will have all the chances to be all right soon.

The neurologist examines your nerves. If you suffer from a nervous break down, insomnia and shattered nerves, he advises you to have, perhaps, a change of climate or surroundings, or to have a good rest.

The surgeon examines your spine and feet. If you have some distortion of spine or a flat foot, he will advise you to go to the swimming-pool, do different physical exercises and have massage.

And the last doctor you come to is your GP. He measures your blood pressure, checks your temperature, sounds your lungs (chest). He will ask you some questions concerning your health and give
