ЗАНЯТТЯ 5: ХУДОЖНІЙ СТИЛЬ

ЕВФЕМІЗМИ, АЛЮЗІЇ, ЦИТАТИ Питання:

Евфемізм (грецьк. утримування від неналежних слів, пом'якшений вираз) –  пом’якшувальні назви неприємних, грубих явищ.

В англійських, російських та українських мовах евфемізми мають багато спільних рис. У трьох мовах можна виокремити групу евфемістичних назв:

1)  смерті, вмирання: to pass away, to expire, to depart one’s life, to breathe one’s last, to pass into darkness, to go west, to join the majority // піти з життя, відійти у вічність, піти за вічну межу, почити вічним сном // преставиться, отойти к Богу (Господу), испустить дух, скончаться, уйти из жизни;

2)  релігійних уявлень: the Lord, the Supreme Being, Heaven, goodness // Творець, спаситель, Спаситель, Творец; the Prince of Darkness, the deuce, the Evil One, the dickens, old Nick, old Harry // володар тьми, лукавий, нечистий, рогатий, лукавый, рогатый.

Проте, на відміну від української та російської мов, англійська пережила протягом останніх десятиліть евфемістичний бум. Внаслідок цього процесу англійська мова поповнилася численними евфемістичними замінниками назв певних етнічних, расових, демографічних та соціальних груп: Afro-American (замість Negro), Native American (замість Indian). Деякі соціальні групи, наприклад, бідне населення, позначаються в англійській мові цілою низкою евфемістичних назв: the needy, the neediest, the ill-provided, the deprived, the socially deprived.

Ще одна група евфемістичних субституцій пов’язана із підвищенням престижу професій та занять. Наприклад janitor замість facility manager, cleaning lady – interior care provider. Таку саму тенденцію можна спостерігати також у російській мові: уборщик мусоропроводов – мусорщик, рабочий ритуальных услуг – могильщик, разрубщик мяса на рынке – мясник, рабочий по стирке и ремонту спецодежды – прачечник, рабочий по уходу за животными – скотник. Вагома частка евфемістичних замінників виникла під впливом поширених в англомовному світі феміністичних поглядів: fireman – firefighter, chairman – chairperson, policeman – officer, spokesman – representative.

12.  “Disadvantaged” is a blanket term for those suffering from poverty, inadequate parenting, mental inadequacies and all the other problems that are considered as detrimental to living the idealized social role.

13.  The company is being downsized so that we can emerge leaner and fitter.

14.  Some of your staff seem not only intellectually challenged but past their sell-by date.

15.  It seems we are in a non-profit situation and may have to withdraw our services.

16.  The man was optically challenged and chronologically gifted.

17.  She hesitated to ask her companion for assistance as he seemed to be rather kindness-impaired.
