Pesticides

(1)You have probably seen insects on leaves or plants. (2)But have you ever seen leaves that have been destroyed because they were eaten by insects? (3)Some insects eat crops that farmers grow. (4)To prevent crop destruction, pesticides are often used. (5)A pesticide is a chemical substance that destroys unwanted insects, weeds, algae, and fungi.

(6)Pesticides have helped to save millions of lives by destroying insects which cause diseases like malaria and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. (7)Pesticides have also increased food crops by destroying plant-killing pests.

(8)Unfortunately, pesticides are nonselective in nature.(9) Pesticides not only kill pests, but animals, birds, fish, and beneficial insects are also killed in areas sprayed by pesticides. (10)Some pests build up a resistance to pesticides. (11)When this happens, greater quantities of a pesticide are needed to kill the pests.(12) Using more of a pesticide that was previously no threat to other organisms in the environment may now kill them.

(13)Since some pesticides are slow to undergo chemical breakdown in nature, they can later be found in living organisms. (14)Pesticides can build up in fish and them these fish may be eaten by birds. (15)Studies show that some pesticides cause the eggshell of birds to be thin. (16)This affects bird reproduction.
