Past Simple and Present Perfect

Study these examples of the Present perfect from the recording of the artist.

1. I've scanned in about a third of these photographs.

2. I've organised the paintings into themes.

Why doesn't the speaker use the Past simple?

We use the Present perfect to describe past actions with present relevance. The artist uses the Present perfect because he is describing a CD he has just made and what he is going to do with it in the near future.

We use the Past simple to describe completed actions in the past. It is often used with time expressions such as last year, before PCs were introduced, in 1998. Note these examples from the recording:

7. I made one for Mary's birthday last week.

I   Match the two halves of these sentences.

1. We used the Internet to email our tutors,

2. I have started my own website for other students doing my course,

3. They have just installed a multimedia computer in the office,

4. Just as television has extended human sight across the barriers of time and distance,

5. When the children stood on pressure pads under the mat,

a.  they could move about inside the pictures on the screen.

b.  to process different forms of data, including text, graphic, audio, animation and video.

c.  if we had any problems with our course papers.

d.  so the computers extend the power of the human mind across the existing barriers.

e.  so we can chat about assignments and help each other if we are in difficulty.

II   Choose the correct form of the verbs in brackets.

1.  you ever (send) a video email attachment? Who you (send) it to?

2. I never (fit) an expansion card. Which type you (fit) last week?

3. I know you (make) your own website. How you (design) it?

4. I (not fix) a printer fault yet. Have you? What kind of fault you (fix)?

5. you ever (use) Dogpile search engine? – I (try) it but I (have) more luck with Ask Jeeves.

III   Make questions to find out this information from your partner. Make sure you use the correct tense in your questions.

Example: write a program / which language

IV   Fill in the gaps in these sentences with a suitable verb. Use either the Present Perfect or Past Simple.

V   Each sentence has a mistake. Find it and correct it.

1.  The ability of tiny computing devices to control complex operations have transformed the way many tasks are performed.           

2.  I have upgrade my computer by plugging in expansion cards.

3.  I used my new printer for printing the computer output on paper since October.

4.  Various communication services becomes available on the Internet recently.

VI   Translate from Russian into English.

1. В последнее время архитекторы широко пользуются компьютерами, чтобы проектировать строения.
