THE BRITISH EDUCATION SYSTEM .

Higher education in Great Britain is provided by a great number of universities , polytechnics  , teacher –training colleges and other colleges .There are 47 universities , 30 polytechnics and great number of colleges  All of them provide full-time education . British universities play a main role in the system of higher education .

The normal course at universities and polytechnics lasts three years . The program of the courses includes different forms of the academic activities such as : lecture , seminars , tutorials , laboratory works and examinations . The program of the first two years includes basic materials and courses in mathematics , physics and electronics . After two years of study there is a one year for industrial training . Students are engaged in industrial  work with engineering firms , government  laboratories , large companies and small specialist firms . Then there is a final year . The program of this year includes special courses and options .

After the final year students usually have a project work .

Those who are interested in practical and production side of engineering take a three –year course and get a professional qualification .After tree years of studies and final examinations they get the degree of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts and can work in industry

Those who are analytically minded and wish to study science take post-graduate course which lasts from one to four years . The first post-graduate degree is that of Master of Science or Master of Arts .This course lasts one year . The degree of Doctor of Philosophy is based on thesis . This post-graduate course lasts three years .

Admission to hither institutions is depends on Advanced Level examinations at school and a personal interview . The candidates who have been most successful in their exams are usually accepted .

Assessment is carried out exams at the end of the first year and Finals at the end of the course . Student can resit the exams if he/she have a medical reason else he/she is sent down .

Tutorial system is based on individual tutorials and personal tutor .

Accommodation on campus guaranteed to all first and second year students . They live in residential units on campus . Final year students usually rent a room . 

Now say some words about universities in Great Britain . All of them can be divided into 3 groups :

Oxford and Cambridge ( or Oxbridge ) , The Redbrick Universities , The New Universities . All of  them has it’s own history , traditions and so on which greatly differ from each other . I don’t talk about this now .
