4 Intelligent Features

To help our customers have an overall understanding of the intelligent optical network, this chapter introduces the overview, status and principle of the intelligent, as well as the intelligent features and applications of the OptiX OSN 9500.

4.1  Overview of Intelligent Optical Network

Intelligent optical network is an automatically switched optical network (ASON). The service request is launched by the client dynamically, and the system will automatically search route and establish/disconnect service connection through signaling control. It integrates switching and transmission, and becomes a new generation of optical network.

4.1.1  Development

As time goes by, the network scale grows bigger and bigger and its structure becomes more and more complex, which bring harder tasks in network management and maintenance. However, the manual ways for service configuration during the management and maintenance are vulnerable to errors. For example, manual labors are involved in the whole process from service request to service turn-up. Especially, when interconnection is required among equipments of different venders, manual operation is mandatory, though it is of low efficiency and usually consumes several weeks or months.

Fast development of the video, multimedia and data services makes the old speech-oriented transmission network no longer meet the requirement of new services. The uncertain and unforeseeable features of the data service require that the optical network bandwidth can be allocated dynamically in real time. It is also for the purpose of lowering the cost for network management and maintenance.

In response to such new service requirements, a new network model – automatically switched transport network (ASTN)/ASON emerges, which can perform network connection automatically.

The concept of introducing dynamic switching into traditional transmission network is a historic breakthrough in both the transmission network concept and technology. Generally speaking, advantages of introducing ASTN/ASON into transmission network include the following:

n  Supports flexible mesh networking configuration, powerful self-healing capability and scalability, and high bandwidth availability.

n  Automatically discovers the network topology.
