Basic metallurgy of cast iron

The term "cast iron" identifies a large family of ferrous alloys. Cast irons are alloys of irons that contain more 2 % carbon and from 1 to 3 % silicon. Wide variations in properties can be achieved by varying the balance between carbon and silicon or by alloying with various metallic or nonmetallic elements, and by varying melting, casting and heat treating.

Cast irons have low melting temperatures, they are very fluid when molten, do not form surface films when they are poured. But, however, cast irons have relatively low impact resistance and ductility, which may limit their use.

Mechanical properties of cast irons - especially strength and ductility, and modulus of elasticity - depend strongly on structure and distribution of microstructural constituents. Physical properties such as thermal conductivity and damping capacity are also strongly influenced by microstructure.

The four basic types of cast iron are white iron, gray iron, ductile iron and malleable iron. White iron and grey iron got their names from the appearances of their fracture surface: white iron has a white, crystalline fracture surface, and gray iron has a gray fracture surface with very tiny facets. Ductile iron got its name from the fact, that in the as-cast form, it displays ductility. By contrast,

neither white nor gray iron has a significant ductility. Malleable iron is cast as white iron, and then "malleablized" - that is heat treated to impart ductility to an otherwise exceedingly brittle material. Besides the four basic types, there are other specific forms of cast iron such as chilled, mottled and compacted graphite cast iron also known as vermicular iron.

Most of the functions in the human body are controlled by hormones. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, controls the amount of: sugar in the blood, which is then used by the body to generate energy. The insufficient production  of insulin  leads to  a common disorder called diabetes.

1.   Insulin is produced by the liver.

2.     Diabetics   should  weigh  themselves weekly.

3.    All of the functions in the human body are controlled by blood pressure.

4.    Diabetes is the result of inadequate insulin being produced.

5.    Diabetics    should be able to enjoy normal and healthy lifestyles.

27.

Having diabetes does not mean giving up all your favourite foods and eating differently from family and friends. However, a sugar-free diet   still   remains  the   cornerstone   of the treatment   of  diabetes.   Nowadays,   doctors recommend that people with diabetes should continue their lives as usual, but should follow a well-balanced and healthy diet.

1.   Diabetics should be careful with foods which contain a lot of sugar

2.   Insulin injections are widely used, but they are not very helpful.

3.   Some foods help to keep blood sugar down.

4.   Diabetics can't lead a normal life.

5.   There is no reason why diabetics should not enjoy a normal life.

28.

. The     British     Diabetic     Association recommends controlling body-weight, reducing fat   consumption   and   eating   more   fruit, vegetables and starchy food. If there is a need to lose weight, realistic short-term targets are most helpful. Aiming for a slow but steady weight loss of one kilogram per week is ideal, until the desireod weight is achieved. Including more  exercise   in  your daily  routine,   and checking your weight once a week are also recommended.

1.   Biscuits contain a lot of fat.

2.   Weight control and regular exercise play an important role in a diabetic's life.

3.   Diabetics should eat plenty of fruit.

4.   The B. D. A. is at the public's disposal.

5.   Food with high amounts of sugar should not be avoided.
