As the time marched, a handful of genres and movements appeared. But what has always been the same was the delight people took in art.

The oldest known paintings date back to 30 000 year B.C. The ancient people engraved and painted different animals and abstract design. The age of the pictures makes us think that art appeared a bit before the language, which is really fascinating. Throughout the ages art had been an impressive means that enable an artist to convey his emotions and thought. That feature has always remained the same despite the trends in art used to undergo significant changes.

Classicism can be called the root of art. It derived from the antique times and accentuates the simplicity of form, proportion and subject matter and doesn’t encourage any self-expression and individuality   According to realists things should have been shown in a realistic manner. This art-style is often viewed in opposition to romanticism. Romanticism, in turn, is full of imagination, emotions and feeiings which are portrayed in dramatic or mysterious manner. Then at the end of the 19th century a new outstanding type of painting, impressionism, came into being. Not concentraited on the details, impressionists put emphasis on emotions that overwhelmed them. As a result we face remarkable pictures with bright colours. Cubism substituted impressionism as the most trendy painting type in the early 20th century. According to this genres all the objects including people and nature were depicted in a form of geometric shapes. A cubist artist portrayed an object from many viewpoints to represent the object in the most complete way possible. And finally the least appreciable style, surrealism, which bases on unsual and fantastic images of  subconscious mind. Aroused in the 20s of the previous century, this art movement is still very popular.

Besides art movemnets (describing how it’s painted) there are also several remarkable types or genres of painting(referring to what is painted). At the medieval times according to the presence of uplifting moral message the importance rank of painting genres was the following. The 1st place occupied history paintings. The term History Genre refers to paintings showing the exemplary deeds and struggles of moral figures. Such pictures, traditionally large-scale public artworks, aim to elevate the morals of the community.

There’s Portraiture Genre in the 2nd place. Portraits are pictures of people, deities or mythological figures in human form.

It’s followed by Genre-Painting which denotes pictures that portray ordinary scenes of everyday life. Whatever the precise content, the scene should be portrayed in a non-idealized way, and the characters should not be endowed with any heroic or dramatic attributes. The foremost example of this type of art was the  Genre Painting of the Dutch Realism School.
