Maladies of the 21st century.

We entered the 21st century with a number of various diseases that previously were unknown to the mankind. The technical progress doesn’t come to a standstill, plants and cars keep polluting the environment, but the amount of waste products is not going to be curtailed, that’s why the diseases called environmental became so wide-spread nowadays.

For instance, heart and cardio-vascular problems is probably the most prevailing cause of people’s death from any maladies worldwide. Heart attack and stroke is a real threat for the people older 40, with excess weight, under stress and having bad habits, they are in the high-risk group. Taking some exercise, keeping to a healthy diet would be a great idea for them.

Asthma is another social malady. Recent studies show a relationship between exposure to air pollutants (e.g. from traffic) and childhood asthma. The disease brings real discomfort to people suffering from it. The main symptoms are coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Asthma can be hardly cured completely, undoubtly it really influences a person’s quality of life.

Allergic reactions occur when a person's immune system reacts to normally harmless substances in the environment. Such substances can significantly vary; they can be contained in food, drinks, medicines or anything that surrounds us.  Thy allergy symptoms – a rash, itching, sneezing, sore eyes - may be considered by some peoples as unimportant, but this opinion is wrong because some severe cases of allergy lead to anaphylaxis that causes death without appropriate treatment.

All the previous-mentioned diseases are rather unpleasant, but they aren’t lethal, whereas cancer is. Caused by environment it involves unregulated cell growth which forms malignant tumors. Cancer is the problem, towards which the greatest minds of world medicine direct their efforts. Still, there’re plenty of ways of treatment besides chemotherapy, but the latter remains the most effective, which means there’s a lot to do towards struggling against it.

Not only cancer, but also HIV\AIDS is a mortal-dangerous malady.  No opposition is found against the virus that destroys a person’s immune system yet. So in most cases after years of fighting against aids, a patient dies from common cold.

Stress, physical and mental abuse, diet, exposure to toxins, pathogens, radiation and chemicals found in almost all personal care products and household cleaners – all this is a great factor that makes us susceptible to various diseases. This Chernobyl disaster has impacted our health a lot. Radiation thrown out of the station became a reason for the increased number of maladies people have, large areas of earth became unfit for use.

Of course nowadays we’re exposed to lots of factors which contribute to diseases which are quite difficult in treatment. Stress has become a real malady as the rapid tempo of our life and plenty of problems we cannot evaluate influence us. In fact stress often becomes our constant condition, and in this case it is a real disaster for our health.

Stress is often accompanied by chronic fatigue syndrome.  It is a medical disorder defined by persistent fatigue which is not substantially relieved by rest and lasts for at least 6 months.  Besides this, a suffer from CFS is to have impaired memory or concentration, extreme, prolonged exhaustion and sickness, unrefreshing sleep, muscle pain, headaches, etc. for about half a year.

Any person’s addiction never leads to anything good, though to my mind drug addiction is the most serious and terrifying. Still both smoking and drinking alcohol is dangerous too as they lead to problems with lungs and liver respectively.

Thus, there are many maladies nowadays, our sensibility is the key of staying fit and health.
