Glossary of techniques for strategic analysis. This article provides a glossary of analytical techniques, страница 2

It would be wrong to move on to the glossary without drawing attention to three more detailed `encyclopaedias', although the older of these may no longer be in print. Each of the books ful®ls a different objective and all make a useful addition to the strategist's reference library.

Argenti, J (1969). Management Techniques, Allen and Unwin, London.

Hussey, D. E. (ed.) (1992). International Review of Strategic Management, volume 3, Wiley, Chichester.

KarloÈf, B (1989). Business Strategy: A Guide to Concepts and Models, Macmillan, London.

Kempner, T. (ed.) (1987). The Penguin Management Handbook, 4th edition, Penguin Books, London.

Benchmarking

I hesitated over whether to include this, as like business process re-engineering, it is a process and method of approach rather than a technique. In the end I decided to err on the side of usefulness rather than purity of de®nition. Benchmarking is a primarily externally oriented activity, which compares processes between your organization and relevant others, which are not necessarily competitors, with the aim of using the ®ndings to become equal or better than the best. To undertake benchmarking, the organization ®rst needs to select the process that will bene®t from comparison, and select and reach agreement with appropriate benchmarking partners. An essential next step is to fully understand your own process before studying that of another ®rm, as without this it may be possible to see that improvement is needed, but not why the other organization is better.
