When in Rome, do as Romans do.

Travelling to different corners of the world gets easier and easier? But how well do we know and understand each other? When dealing with people from different cultures? We may sometimes have misunderstanding or make mistakes. Imagine a number of confusing situations arisen from our ignorance of the forms of behavior considered acceptable in other countries./A foreigner is invited by his British colleague to a restaurant and is greatly surprised to see that he is expected to pay for himself. He does not know that in Britain it’s quite common to pay for your  own share of a restaurant bill. It’s called ‘going Dutch’./Another foreigner, who visits Germany for the first time receives the invitation from the people he is hardly familiar with. He wants to please the hostess and takes her a beautiful bunch of 12 red roses. But the hostess are embarrassed. What’s wrong? The man is not aware of the fact that red roses are a symbol of love and intimacy and even number is not appropriate. One more foreign guest afraid staying too long and make the hostess start thinking the guests can’t wait to leave. Non-native speakers do not sometimes know how to begin a conversation with a stranger? What title or form of greeting to use./To avoid situation causing such gaffes we should be aware of the peculiarities of different lifestyles and the rules of international etiquette. If you go abroad it is necessary to get acquainted with the customs of the country you are going to visit? To learn its most important social conventions and rituals: gestures, leave-taking, invitations, gift-giving, degrees of formality and behavior in public places./ For example, in Greece there are no rules of greeting. Greeks may shake hands, embrace or kiss at first and every meeting. Greek hospitality is sincere? Incredibly generous and sometimes overwhelming/ be careful not to praise a specific object or the host may insist on giving it to you. If you are invited to a Greek house take a bunch of flowers or a cake for the hostess./Germans don’t kiss, handshakes are customary on meeting and leaving. A Germans home is a private castle and invitation to German homes is special privilege. A man should bring flowers, which he will unwrap in the entrance hall and present to the hostess upon greeting her. Avoid red roses because of the romantic connotation and don’t offer an even number, as it’s considered to bring bad luck. A tank-you note should be sent within a few days for any hospitality.
