My hobbies and interests

Every man tries to fill his life with different occupations. Only a few people can spend their leisure time doing nothing and live a lazy life. Others try to do something, which is usually called hobby. Every one of us has his own hobby. Hobbies and interests help us to get away from our day-to-day problems and to reveal our new abilities and skills because not many people are fond of their work. There are many people who can’t stand their work, but have to do it to make the living. Hobbies help them to switch to another sort of occupation, which they are interested in.

As for me I can’t imagine my life without my hobbies and interests. It would be boring and dull. No doubt I have quite a lot of hobbies and they are very different. I’m interested in business, money, sports, Maths, nature, computers and music. In spite of the fact that studying occupies the main place in my life, I’m crazy about music and sport. I can listen to different kinds of music. It gives me a lot of pleasure. When a child I had guitar lessons for a year and I sometimes used to dream of being a professional musician, but as time went on, I realized that I would never reach that standard, mainly because I didn’t have a good enough ear for music. I lost my interest and gave my lessons up. Listening to music is a different matter. I go to concerts when I have time and I often listen to music when I’m studying. My tastes are quite various. I enjoy both pop & classical music. Classical music gives me delight and pleasure. I quite like Mozart & Beethoven and Chajkovski. You know, many young people today have a passion for new rhythms, and I am not an exception. I’m also keen  on American folk music. The one thing I can’t really stand is techno rave, especially when it is played too loudly.

I’m also interested in sports. I like tough sport activities like skiing, mountaineering and motorcycling. When I was younger I was fond of karate and wrestling. Now I am keen on bodybuilding and I’m going to do it all my life. I like running very much. I try to keep fit, so I run 1 or 2 kilometers practically every day. I particularly enjoy cross-country running, where you have to run across fields, jump over streams and so on. While I’m running I think about all sorts of things and at the end of a run I’m sometimes surprised to find that I’ve managed to solve a problem that was on my mind. I’m interested in fishing and water tourism as well as running. My mother doesn’t share my interest in tough sport activities, but she thinks it’s better than being miserable. So now I’m dreaming of taking up water skiing and hang-gliding.

I don’t like reading books very much, but when the weather is rainy or windy, there is nothing better than curling in an armchair and reading an interesting book. At that moment I forget all my problems and difficulties. I hate modern science fiction & adventure books. These stories are rather sappy and you have nothing to draw from them. I can’t stand detectives & love stories either. I prefer classical literature: Block, Bulgakov and Dostoevsky, Shakespeare, Dickens and others. I usually read English writers in the original. I quite like historical novels. As I said before I like History, Maths, English and Computer Science, but Russian doesn’t appeal to me in the least.

Although I’m not a regular theatregoer, I like spending an evening with my friends watching an interesting performance at the theatre. As for the cinema it leaves me cold. Sometimes I watch TV when I have free time, but I’m not really into it. It annoys me when a good interesting film is interrupted every twenty minutes or so by a series of stupid commercials. I always turn the sound off and it makes me really furious.

Well, that’s almost everything about my likes and dislikes. But it’s my feeling that the most exciting aspect of a hobby is that you can always learn from it no matter what it is like.

1.  What are your interests? What are you fond of?

2.  How do you enjoy your leisure time?

3.  Do you wish you had more free time?

4.  If you had more free time, what would you occupy yourself with?

5.  Do you remember your hobby you used to enjoy from the age of five to ten?

6.  Is there anything you’d like to do but can’t do either because it’s not handy or because you can’t afford it?

7.  Are there any hobbies that you have recently given up?

8.  What hobbies do you now regret not taking up when you were younger?

9.  How did you come to take up your hobby? How do you carry on your hobby?

10. What do you see as your pleasures in life?

11. Are there any clubs at your school? What club would you like to join and why?
