Status - Sovereign State

Area - 603.700 square kilometers

Population - about 52.000.000

Capital - Kiev

Ukraine is one of the largest countries in Europe. It is located in the south-west of the European continent. Ukraine borders on the Russian Federation, Belaruss, Moldova, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary and Romania. There are 24 administrative regions and the Republic of the Crimea in Ukraine.

Ukraine is washed by the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov and it has very important ports. The major rivers are the Dnieper, the Dnister, the Bug and the Donets. The Dnieper is the third longest river in Europe; it divides the country into right-bank and left-bank territories.

The surface of Ukraine is mainly flat. The Ukrainian Carpathians and the Crimean Mountains make up 5 per cent of its area.

Ukraine has many industrial raw materials. It is rich in iron, metals, coal, gas and other natural resources. The country has metallurgical and heavy industries. Ukraine is also one of the largest agricultural countries.

There are many large cities in Ukraine, among them Kyiv, the capital of the state; Kharkiv, an industrial and cultural centre; Donetsk, a coal-mining centre of the country; Dnepropetrovsk, a large machine-building and important metallurgical centre; Lviv, a large industrial, scientific and cultural centre and many others.

Ukraine is a sovereign state. Ukraine's population declared its independence on the 1st of December 1991. Now Ukraine has its own territory, higher mid local bodies of state power^ President representatives and government, national emblem, state flag and anthem.

President is the head of the state. He is also Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

The Supreme Council (Verkhovna Rada, Parliament) is the highest legislative body in the Republic. The Supreme Council elects its presidium. It also sets up the Government - the Cabinet of ministers of Ukraine. The Cabinet of Ministers is the highest executive and administrative organ of the state. Regional, district, city, town and village councils are the local bodies of power.

The highest organ of judicial power is the Supreme Court.

Ukraine is one of the founder members of the United Nations Organization. It signed the UN's Charter at the San Francisco conference in 1945. Ukraine participates in the work of many international organizations.

Ukraine establishes relations with countries throughout the world. It makes direct contacts with them signing agreements and treaties. There are more than 30 embassies in Ukraine. Many countries are deeply interested in the democratic reforms taking place in our Republic. A lot of joint ventures have been created.

Foreign investments are to help Ukraine to restore its economy. Ukraine should reorganize its national economic structure, quickly solve problems connected with the introductions, social and cultural development, financial system, taxation policy and price formation.

Ukraine maintains close ties with all the members of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) and is going to cooperate with them, to develop economic, trading and cultural relations.
