Caffeine is used orally as a mild central nervous system stimulant to prevent falling asleep and to restore mental alertness in fatigued patients. It is known that caffeine is used orally in combination with antihistamines to overcome the sedative properties of the latter drugs, but the efficacy of caffeine and the dosage required have not been adequately established. One can use caffeine and sodium benzoate injection in conjunction with supportive measures to treat respiratory depression associating with overdosage of CNS depressant drugs (e.g., opiate analgesics, alcohol) and with electric shock. However, because of the some questionable benefit and transient action, most authorities believe caffeine and other analeptics to be useless in these conditions and recommend any other supportive therapy.

Caffeine is known to be administered orally or by slow IV infusion using a syringe infusion pump. They say that caffeine and sodium benzoate injections have also been administered subcutaneously. The preservative free commercially available injection is for single use only, and any unused portion should be discarded. It is important that such oral solution be measured accurately (e.g., using a 1 ml or other appropriate syringe).

Caffeine is determined to be found in tea leaves, coffee beans, cola nuts or it can also be synthesized. Depending on the coffee sort its chemical composition differs to some extent. But average teaspoonful of ground coffee necessary to prepare one cup of the drink contains single therapeutic dose of caffeine (0.07 0.1 gr).

Coffee stimulates gastric secretion. People with nervousness and those suffering from insomnia, gastric and duodenal ulcers or hypertension are not recommended to drink coffee.
